Learn about the first Chinese city to prohibit eating dogs and cats
In a first step of its kind in China, the city of Shenzhen in the province of "Guangdong" decided to prevent its residents from eating flesh of cats and dogs due to the outbreak of "Covid-19" disease.
This ban comes after studies that linked the spread of the Corona virus to the consumption of wild animal meat.
The city authorities in southern China explained in a statement that dogs and cats as pets have established a much closer relationship with humans than all other animals, noting that banning the consumption of dogs, cats and other pets is a common practice in developed countries and in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
"This ban also responds to the spirit of human civilization," according to the "mothership" website.
China had previously banned animal trade after the outbreak of the Coronavirus, but the city of Shenzhen took stronger measures after it expanded the ban to include banning the eating of dog and cat meat.
The new law will enter into force early next month.
The official newspaper "Shenzhen Daily" said that "there is no evidence" to prove that the meat of wild animals is more nutritious than poultry and livestock, while several societies and bodies concerned with the rights of animals and preserving their lives celebrated the step.
